Helene M. Giroux has been
an educator for 35 years. She began her teaching career
in an Elementary School in Regina, Saskatchewan. She
then moved to British Columbia and taught in the Public
School system as an Elementary School teacher and French
Immersion teacher for many years. It was when dealing
with all the highly gifted children who were enrolled
in her French Immersion classes that she began to see
the special needs of the highly gifted learners in her
care.
After more training, Helene left
the public school system and started a private school
for gifted children. She was the Administrator and also
taught in this small Special Needs school for many years. The school
quickly expanded from two classrooms to ten classrooms
with 13 children in each class. Most of the experiences
discussed in her book, "The Ultimate School Experience:
a school with soul", come from these years. She
stresses however, that all the ideas in this small book
are experiences for every child in every type of school
program.
Helene holds two degrees - a Bachelor's
degree and a Master's degree in education. She is still
teaching and learning - most recently, with adult basic
education learners. " I love working with adult
learners - they are inspiring to me. They want more
out of life and are taking the steps to make a better
life for themselves and their families", she says.
She presently resides in Saskatchewan
with no immediate plans for retiring. She has written
a Communication Course for the trades and Industry,
and is also working on a novel.
